Liraglutide Research Evidence
The Liraglutide evidence base: trials, journals, and what the data does not yet show.
Clinical Evidence Base
Liraglutide has the longest clinical track record of any GLP-1 receptor agonist, with over a decade of post-marketing safety data since Victoza's 2010 approval. The LEAD trial program established its glycemic efficacy in type 2 diabetes; the SCALE program established weight-loss efficacy (Saxenda, approved 2014), with average placebo-subtracted weight loss around 5–6% — modest compared to semaglutide or tirzepatide, reflecting its shorter half-life and lower peak systemic exposure.
Regulatory and Legal Status
Liraglutide is prescription-only and FDA-approved under both Victoza (type 2 diabetes) and Saxenda (chronic weight management) indications. It is a legitimate pharmaceutical, not a research chemical — it should only be obtained through a licensed prescriber and pharmacy. Off-label or self-directed use outside a prescribing relationship carries the same legal and safety concerns as any prescription-only medication.
