Well-Established Obstetric Use, Thinner Behavioral Evidence
Oxytocin's obstetric use is one of the oldest, most established indications in modern pharmacology. Its use for social bonding, trust, and anxiety research is a much newer and more mixed literature — hundreds of small studies exist, but replication has been inconsistent, and effect sizes are often modest.
Regulatory and Legal Status
Synthetic oxytocin is prescription-only and FDA-approved as Pitocin/Syntocinon for labor induction and postpartum hemorrhage management. Intranasal oxytocin used for social/bonding/stress research is not FDA-approved for that purpose and is sold by research-peptide vendors as an unapproved compound (RUO). Researchers and users should verify the legal status of intranasal/research-use oxytocin in their jurisdiction prior to use.
