Oxytocin Pharmacokinetics
Oxytocin half-life, absorption, routes of administration, and clearance.
Extremely Rapid Clearance
Oxytocin has a plasma half-life of roughly 3–5 minutes, rapidly broken down by the enzyme oxytocinase. This very short half-life is why IV administration for labor requires a continuous infusion rather than a single bolus, and why intranasal research protocols are timed shortly before the activity of interest.
