Delta-Wave Sleep Research Origin
DSIP was first identified in the 1970s in studies where blood from sleep-deprived rabbits was found to induce delta-wave (deep, slow-wave) sleep patterns when transferred to other animals. The nonapeptide responsible was isolated and named accordingly. Its exact receptor mechanism in humans remains incompletely characterized compared to modern, well-mapped GPCR-targeting peptides.
Stress and Circadian Modulation
Beyond its namesake sleep effect, DSIP has been studied for roles in stress-response buffering and circadian regulation, with some research suggesting interaction with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Most of this evidence comes from older animal studies rather than modern, well-controlled human trials.
